Ethan Keating and Gideon Root, MJSHS 8th graders, placed 15th out of 449 Kansas teams that participated in a fall stock market game first semester. Teams placing in the top 5% received free t'shirts.
Mrs. Reinhart, MJSHS Business and Technology Instructor, introduced the stock market to her Introduction to Business class first semester. The students were required to participate in a free stock market game online (www.stocksquest.com) throughout the semester, where they were ranked among the members of their class. In addition, the 1st semester students participated in another online game where they competed with schools throughout Kansas.
The Kansas Council for Economic Education sponsors an online stock market game for students in grades 7-12 each school year. The Council uses The SIFMA Foundation's Stock Market Game⢠(SMG), which gives students the opportunity to invest a hypothetical $100,000 in an on-line portfolio. Using the actual stock market prices, the students' portfolio increases or decreases depending on the status of the stocks they have chosen to invest in. Besides the competitive side of the game, the students are also learning economic and financial concepts.
"In addition to placing in the top 5%, the stock market game facilitators accidentally placed our teams in the high school bracket. I was so proud of these students", stated Mrs. Reinhart.
